After reading reviews on Amazon, I decided I would enjoy this author. Having never read her books I did not know what to expect. I found the story very engaging and it moved quickly.In an age when sex, vulgar language and gore seem to fill the pages of modern mysteries, it is a relief to find a story and writer who relies on the plot and characters to make the book enjoyable.
I have already and will in the future purchase other books written by Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Could have done without a couple of racist remarks, but noting that it was an older time, and it was not a recurring theme.
The detective tale itself was decent, moves along quickly, and pops up a bit of a twist.
Our heroine is an older city lady with a sharp, humorous tongue who moves with her adult niece and nephew into an countryside mansion for a summer holiday while their home is being remodeled. They quickly find that the new place has two notable features -a convenient spiral staircase and an inconvenient ghost. They have no place else to go, and Aunty is determined to stay, even with an annoying poltergeist - and even when the son of the owner of the house turns up dead for no good reason at the foot of their circular staircase, sending Aunty in circles investigating circumstances that.... appropriately... spiral way of control in sudden disappearances, appearances, thefts, national scandal, kidnappings, kids and hordes of detectives tramping through her house and garden....
Story doesn't flag, far cry from ordinary "catch the ghost" tale I expected. Aunty takes no crap and takes no prisoners. Set in older America (had trains and electricity, but horses and buggies as well as motorcars).
I remembered reading this book year's ago. Very good mystery story, holds your attention. Mary Robert Reinhardt brings humor and mystery together as one story. First person always let's you feel like you are actually in the story. I think this might have been the first book I read and went lookin for More by this author.
I remembered her other books, The Door, The Wall, The Bat were all very good read's.
I really enjoyed this one. It is an interesting and well written window into some of the social classes of the time. Intelligent readers will not be offended by things that today would be called politically incorrect. I was immediately drawn into the story and it kept me interested until the conclusion. Agatha Christie fans will like this one. So nice to read a mystery book without gratuitous violence and vulgarity where the story is character and plot driven and is clearly written by someone with a command of the English language. Well done.
This is an old-fashioned story. Rinehart wrote many stories in the earlier decades of the twentieth century, and this was my first experience with her. The background and the main characters are of an age and a culture in American history we won't see come again. The story is written in the first person of a middle-aged, well off spinster of the day. All of that is charming in itself if you like that sort of thing - which I do, especially if it is a mystery.
Beware, because there are some attitudes that were common place and acceptable in that time that are not so now. Also, the story line and the large number of characters require the reader to pay attention.
Follow Miss Rachel Innes when she rents a large country estate for the summer, where she and the niece and nephew she brought up can relax and enjoy a time away from the city. It doesn't turn out that way at all. Sunnyside doesn't live up to it's name. There are rumors, strange happenings, nervous servants, and finally, murder. Then it's too late to leave. This lady who lived and enjoyed a most ordinary of lives has to step up to find out the truth and save her family.
This is a story written in 1908 about an "elderly" spinster of means who takes a summer home with her adult nephew and niece whom she has raised. When a murder occurs at the summer manor she has rented, instead of running away, she digs in and gets the thrill of her life solving the mystery. It's a story of greed and improper love. More people die and Miss Innes digs in deeper. She climbs ladders onto the roof of the big house. She encounters scoundrels on the unlet stairway at night. She even suspects her own dear niece and nephew. Some particular 1908 color is the horrible condesending characterizations of the black servants. Her determination and intelligence eventually solve the crime and unravel all the details of the shenanigans. It was a little hard to keep up with all the many characters and the comings and goings of the servants. Very entertaining. I'm glad I didn't miss this one. As an avid Agatha Christie fan, I have to say Rinehart's style is very different and not as satisfying to me but it certainly is a book worth reading.
